Two of our Coder Dojo Ninjas, Shane and Samuel, attended the third annual #EUDojo event in the EU Parliament in Brussels last month. Young coders from all over Europe were welcomed to Brussels to showcase their coding and technology skills and to teach some MEPs how to write a few lines of code. It was a great trip and an amazing opportunity for members of the Clubhouse to represent Ireland at a European event.
The event, celebrating Europe Code Week, consisted of a two hour session, where 35 young coders taught the MEPs how to create a basic HTML & CSS website. MEPs in attendance included Catherine Stihler (UK), Marian Harkin (Ireland), Mairead McGuinness (Ireland), Brian Hayes (Ireland), Vicky Ford (UK), Kaja Kallas (Estonia), Bogdan Wenta (Poland), Brando Benifei (Italy), Marian Marinescu (Romania), Eva Paunova (Bulgaria), Julia Reda (Germany) and Diane Dodds (UK).
A huge well done and thanks to Shane and Sam!! Read more about the event on the coder dojo blog here and on the Euractiv site here.
During the summer, young people at the Clubhouse had the opportunity to become young Film Critics for Film Ireland. As part of this programme, young people attended screenings of films before release, learned how to write reviews, and had their work published on the Film Ireland website. It was a brilliant experience and a great chance to critique and discuss media. We look forward to doing more with Film Ireland!
Three members of the clubhouse have been working hard over the last few months to create a short film for Muscular Dystrohpy Ireland to raise awareness of the organisation and the work they do. Muscular Dystrophy Ireland supports and provides facilities, such as independent living, for people with the condition muscular dystrophy. MDI supports advocating for services to enable people with neuromuscular conditions to fully participate in society and to live a life of their own choosing.
Watch the video above to see the end result to find out more about the great work that MDI do!
The Clubhouse team had a very successful and fun day at the St. Patrick’s Festival “Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science” on Sunday 15th March. The team was Boxy, Abdul, Kerryn, Des, Luke, Angel and Bianca. We all met at the clubhouse at 9:30am and after packing all our gear into the bus we made our way over to Merrion Street. We were assigned a really nice big space in one of the tents which we set up for our demonstrations and workshop.
We brought along a number of projects to showcase. Angel and Bianca demonstrated many of the projects to the visitors. Everyone loved the guitar that Angel and Emma made with MakeyMakey and Scratch.
We ran a workshop building Drawbots which was an amazing success. We unfortunately ran out of Drawbots during the day and will need to bring tons more for next time!!
Angel also had an opportunity to try out some science.
Thanks to all the team for a great show and a special extra Thank You to Angel, Bianca and Luke for running a great event for the Clubhouse.
Today we made little baby over grows and sewed them together. We put it on a string. One side was white and one side was any design. The white side has messages on it. Andrea took the photo’s. Angel, Bianca, Priscilla and me thought of the idea. Then Angel told Ivanna. Darcie and Angel made a baby bag for Gina. Darcie also made a bottle warmer and a purse. Kimi also made a purse. Kerryn helped me and Kiara to sew. Bianca, Darcie, Angel, Kimi and Emily sewed as well. We hope Gina, Garry and the baby have a happy life together.
